On Wednesday, January 15th, our fourth graders were greeted in the Little School music room by four members of the Lexington Symphony Orchestra. The four musicians were at the Little School to prepare the students for their upcoming field trip to Cary Hall in Lexington. The students were entertained by the sounds of the violin, viola, clarinet, and tuba. The symphony members did a fabulous job speaking with and taking questions from the students.
A little over a week later, on Thursday, January 23rd, our fourth-grade students were treated to a performance by the Lexington Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Jonathan McPhee. The hour-long concert was a “guided tour” of the orchestra through time. Beginning with a sung chant by monks, a fanfare by the brass, and dances played by the recorders, the orchestra grew little by little with every piece of music played.
Just as the program title suggests, students were guided through the instruments and how composers used them in their time. It was fascinating to watch and hear how the orchestra grew, just as it did in history. The concert featured music by J.S. Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, Souza, and beloved composer John Williams. There was even a visit from Darth Vader.
A sincere thank you to the E. Ethel Little School PTO and the North Reading Cultural Council for providing our students such an enriching experience in the Arts. Many Thanks!
