Read to Feed: A Heifer Project Fundraiser

To celebrate family literacy month in November, the Little School will be raising money for a non-profit called the Heifer Project International. This is an optional project to support a wonderful cause and encourage the children to display their reading talents. The Heifer Project provides farm animals and farm support to families in need around the globe. The children can earn money for the organization by reading books.

At an assembly today, the children viewed a video to help them understand how the money they raise is used. An important part of their understanding includes the idea that small contributions added together can make a difference. We ask that only close family members, who would share in the child's reading success, pledge a nominal amount of money per minutes read (in the order of 10-25 cents per 20 minutes read). We are looking to raise approximately $2-$3 per child. Please do not have you child solicit contributions door to door.

This program will run for one month and the children should return their booklist and contributions to school by Friday, November 30th. Please collect all of your child's pledges at home and write ONE check for the total amount to Heifer Project, International. Children will pool their resources to support their class animal. For example, if everyone from one class earns $ 1-$2, then the class would have enough for a hive of bees. At the end of the program, the children will receive a certificate for their participation.

This program is strictly voluntary, but it involves so many valuable lessons for the children. We hope that everyone will consider participating! Please refer to Heifer International's website, www.ReadtoFeed.org, if you would like further information.
