The 5th grade class had the opportunity to see first-hand just how forces, such as compression and tension, affect a structure and its stability. The presentation was as entertaining as it was educational as the kids got to assist in building a truss bridge, a suspension bridge, an arch and more!
Following the presentation, each class had their own hands-on workshop where they got to put all of their knowledge about structures to the test!
After working on building stable, smaller scale bridges, students, working in teams, were challenged to build the tallest structure that they could. Using their newfound knowledge and lots of creativity, students rose to the challenge building structures that were taller than the students themselves! It's safe to say that after today the fifth graders will be looking at everyday structures in a whole new way!
